Travel Tip: Travel Insurance

Organising Travel Insurance is an essential part of your pre-travel “to-do” list and something your Travel Advisor will discuss with you at the time of booking. For most, travel is a wonderful experience but things can happen. Travel Insurances protects you from unforeseen circumstances such as illness or travel disruptions. As the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) state on their website, “If you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs handles over 20,000 cases a year involving Australians in difficulty overseas. Unfortunately, not all of these cases involve travellers who are covered by travel insurance. Travellers who are not covered by insurance are personally liable for covering medical and associated costs incurred.

Before you choose a travel insurance plan you should make sure it covers the place you plan to visit and the activities you plan to do. It should cover you for medical expenses, theft of valuables, damage to luggage and disruption or cancellations to travel bookings. It is also worth checking to see if you are covered for pre-existing medical conditions. Travel Insurance

Medical expenses can be extremely high, especially while you’re overseas. The Australian Government will not cover your medical costs while you are overseas. If you do not have travel insurance, you are risking hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of additional charges which you are personally liable to pay. It is wise to check that your policy covers you for changes that occur while you are overseas, as some policies do not offer refunds if the security or safety environment changes. These terms and conditions will influence whether you are entitled to a refund if DFAT changes the level of the travel advice or possible travel warnings.

We recommend Covermore Travel Insurance which has over 20 years experience in travel insurance and over 10 million policy holders; and is one of Australia’s most highly regarded providers of Travel Insurance. Peace of mind is assured with 24 hour emergency access provided to travellers, and a service team that is available 7 days a week, online and over the phone.
